Floral Greeting

Concrete

In 1971, the city of Lahti organised a sculpture competition to liven up the area in front of City Hospital. At the time, Lahti-born sculptor Liisa Ruusuvaara was in the hospital herself and got the idea for Flower Greeting. The winner of the competition was announced in June 1972, with Floral Greeting awarded first prize. The work in front of the hospital’s main entrance was unveiled in June 1973. It was removed for repairs and reinstalled in its current location in 2018.

The work consists of five sinuous flowers with stems, the tallest of them reaching a height of 6.5 metres. The work is made of concrete, rebar and metal mesh. Lights placed in the centre of the work illuminate the flowers at night. Soaring skywards with its petals spread out, the work embodies joy, hope and health.
