Grains of Knowledge

Reijo Huttu

2001

Bronze

Grains of Knowledge by Reijo Huttu stands in front of Harjula College. The bronze sculpture depicts a small child with arms raised, eyes looking straight ahead. The barefoot child is wearing a long dress, onto which grains tumble from the child’s open hands. Some of the grains have fallen to the ground at the child’s feet. The meticulously realistic sculpture can be seen as a metaphor for childlike curiosity and a thirst for life and knowledge. Given that the work stands in front of a community college, the figure’s confident and energetic step and uplifted arms take on an even stronger meaning as a symbol of lifelong self-development and the desire to learn.
