Concrete

Lahti-based artist Olavi Lanu had his breakthrough at the 1978 Venice Biennale. After Venice, his biennale works, themed “Life in Finnish forests”, went on a tour of all the Nordic countries. For the exhibition in Finland, he created a new piece called Lime Tree. The original sculpture was made of fibreglass, but once the city’s culture committee had decided to acquire it for a public space, it was cast in concrete to make it more durable. The sculpture was unveiled in 1985 on the occasion of the opening of a new pedestrian thoroughfare between Aleksanterinkatu and Vapaudenkatu streets. The pedestrian street is today known as Lanu Square, after the artist.
