Steel

Satu Loukkola’s Morning Tree is an installation in two parts that is spread across the façade of the Salpausselkä school in Lahti. Made of patinated laser-cut steel, the reliefs take as their theme a lush deciduous tree and a small bird singing on its branch. The free, irregular shapes of the foliage and branches create a fascinating contrast with the rigid material, making the installation eminently approachable. An emotionally attuned viewer may read the delicate bird motif as a reference to students, each singing their own song as they leave their place of learning and venture out into the world.
