Paragraph, memorial to Secretary of State Teemu Hiltunen

Matti Koskela

2002

Red granite, grey granite, diorite

A competition was held in autumn 1999 for a monument to Teemu Hiltunen, former Secretary of State and Mayor of Lahti. Four Lahti-based professors were invited to take part: Mauno Hartman, Reino Hietanen, Matti Koskela and Olavi Lanu. The winner was Matti Koskela’s entry Paragraph. In 2002, the finished work was erected in Vaahtera Square in front of the Kansantalo community hall.

The work consists of three elements made of different types of stone: the dominant element is a red-granite disc sitting atop a 27-metre long bar of grey granite. Under the disc and bar is a circular component made of black diorite. On one side of the disc is an excerpt from city council minutes regarding the decision to construct Lahti City Theatre. On the other side are lines corresponding to the sectors of the last state budget prepared by Hiltunen, in 1989.
