Relief on school façade

Eino Kauria

1950

Mosaic

Artist Eino Kauria’s animal relief on the façade of the newly completed Kärpänen school was unveiled at the school’s inauguration in May 1950. The motif of the work on the front wall of the building depicts two children who have come to admire a family of elk.

The ceramic relief was made using a mosaic technique. It shows a female elk suckling her calf, with the male elk behind her, vigilantly guarding his family. The girl and the boy witnessing the delicate moment have their backs to the viewer. The small plants between the people and the animals tie the two subjects together.
