Jussi Mäntynen

1955

Bronze

This sculpture was donated to the city of Lahti by local Karelian associations on the occasion of the city’s 50th anniversary. It is a replica of the statue made by Jussi Mäntysen for Torkkeli Park in Vyborg in 1924. The sculpture was erected in Lahti in 1955. The purpose of the sculpture was to symbolise the role of Karelian refugees in the culture and businesses of Lahti in the post-war period. It was also meant to preserve the link to the common past of Karelians in Lahti. Similar statues are found in Kupittaa Park in Turku and in front of the Zoological Museum in Helsinki. The sculpture is modelled on an elk named Ville that once lived in Korkeasaari Zoo in Helsinki.
