Sirkka Tarumaa

1957

A culturally valuable old workers’ hall popularly known as People’s House is located at Saimaankatu 12. Designed by architect Sirkka Tarumaa and completed in 1957, the two-storey building consists of offices facing Aleksanterinkatu street and a ballroom on the Saimaankatu side. Having been extended and undergone several renovations, the building is now used by the city to host cultural events. There is also a cinema, Kino Iiris. On the façade facing Saimaankatu street is a motif designed and executed by the architect that depicts a man and a woman holding hands. The theme of holding hands can be interpreted as a reference to the history of the People’s House, i.e., to the working class aspiration to settle conflicts and emphasise community instead of division.
